What should I consider if I change the number of cylinders in my hard drive from UNIX fdisk utility?
I'm trying to establish a "new" hard drive, but after rebuilding the hard drive disk recovery "of the operating system not found" error. The recovery process is executed perfectly and it seems that everything is installed correctly, but "operating system not found" I tried fixmbr, changed the number of cylinders (using the utility fdisk linux), because when running fdisk from linux, I have a notice indicating that my 40GB hard drive has more than 1024 bytes, and could cause problems with other OS during startup. Also tried repartitioning, making the operating system partition as active (bootable) ... It seems that the system is operating in the hard disk, but can not boot. Is there a way to boot from CD and run the operating system is not bootable from the hard drive files? The hard disk has been detected by the BIOS, but the bios had marked as not bootable! And 'always so. If you have the "operating system not found" make sure that the partition boot is on the BIOS level. make sure everything goes well from the beginning. Then you can continue to activate the boot partition to install Linux or any operating system that will do it for you.
Recovery of Windows, Linux or Unix? If Windows, make sure the boot partition is set to active using fdisk. It should be done during the recovery process, but check that. It will not start unless there is an active partition. Also, if you have one of these great new units, use the utility that comes with the unit to prepare the drive before loading the operating system. some are too large and need an overlay. Unix / Linux - it is necessary to search for help with partitioning a search engine. It is much easier than a long explanation here.
