The heart is a marvelous creation, designed to pump blood through the body and 24/7/365 Leap Year 366. Awake or asleep, humans depend on the heart to do its work. No one ever consciously direct the work. The core functions without conscious decision or effort.

Once the patient's cardiologist and reached a decision to proceed with surgery, which will consider options for the type of artificial valve will be used: organic or mechanical.

1. Blood clots tend to form on all mechanical valves. The risk of blood clots causing stroke in the patient is small, but precise. To counter the risk of blood clots, patients are required to take blood thinners rest of their lives. Blood thinners are generally safe, but may increase bleeding inside the body. If the bleeding that occurs in the brain, may lead to death.

2nd Blood clots sometimes form on the biological valves, as well, but the risk is significantly reduced. Patients who take anticoagulants for only 6 weeks to 3 months. The main problem of these artificial valves is that at the end of the wear and must be replaced. The expected duration is 10 to 15 years, so a couple can have several replacements.

3rd Anesthesia and the diversion of blood through a bypass machine can cause complications of heart valve surgery, as arrhythmias, pneumonia, renal failure, stroke, and death.

4th Blood clots are other complications that can result from heart valve surgery. These usually show up a few days after surgery, causing pain and swelling in the affected leg or legs. If a clot of blood is released from the leg, is able to travel to the lungs and cause shortness of breath, chest pain or even death.

5th Other complications are heart valve surgery: bleeding during or after surgery that may require a blood transfusion, infection in the chest incision infections and deep in the heart or the sternum.

6. The new Short valve may not function properly after surgery or much later, requiring emergency surgery. This is rare, but may lead to death.

7th Arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat) may occur after cardiac valve surgery. These are controlled by medication. Usually, after some stop days or weeks, but some become permanent.
